The city of Kremenchug was founded in 15th century. Designed to be a fortress it has lived through many turbulent events in Ukrainian and Russian history. City's advantageous location on the intersection of old land trade routes with Dnepr waterway promoted its rapid growth. It was successfully defended from frequent attacks by foreign invaders in 16th-18th centuries, and Kremenchug's regiment earned fame and glory in the Patriotic War of 1812. During the World War II, city was occupied and almost completely destroyed by Nazis. In the 19th century, due to the introduction of steamships and construction of railroad, Kremenchug was transformed into an industrial centre of the Poltava Gubernia. Today it is still considered one of the largest trade and business centers of Ukraine. However it also has plentiful parks, gardens and sandy beaches.
