Mariupol ( Zhdanov ) City Information |
||||||
Mariupol is a port city situated in the south-east part of Ukraine on the coast of the Azov Sea, at the creek of the the Kalmius River. Mariupol was known already at the beginning 16-th century as the Cossack fortress Kalmius and then in 1780 after the migration of the Crimean Greeks to this region it was renamed Mariupol at their request. Mariupol was called Zhdanov from 1948 till 1988 in honor of an outstanding Communist leader, a member of Stalin’s clique. The city is famous not only for its beaches and sanatoriums, but also for its metallurgical industry. It’s a surprising neighborhood: large beaches and huge enterprises of heavy, metalworking, coke-chemical and machine-building industries located directly on the coast. One of the most famous enterprises is “Azovstal” iron and steel works. The air surely leaves much to be desired in the whole city, although it depends on the wind direction. The population of Mariupol is around 480,000 people. The city is located at the distance of 160 km from Donetsk. Mariupol is an important seaport and industrial center. There are two large metallurgical works (one of them “Azovstal), whose production makes a considerable part of the export of Ukraine. Mariupol is also a seaside and mud cure resort. |
