The Lychakiv Cemetery was the first public cemetery in L'viv, founded in 1786 after the prohibition by Austrian authorities of further burials in ancient churchyards within the city limits. The cemetery covers 40 hectares (about 110 acres) and since 1991 it has formed a state-sanctioned historical-artistic reserve. Densely wooded and laid out on very hilly terrain, the whole presents a very picturesque scene reminiscent of the Pyrenees. Many graves contain the remains of eminent Poles (such as the authors G.Zapolska and M.Konopnicka) and Austrians. A large number of Ukrainians prominent in the fields of learning and politics have also found their final resting place here. |
